Emma autumn de wilde1/20/2024 The Miami-born, Argentina- and England-raised actress has a base in West London but has spent the last four years dashing between film sets. Only 23, Taylor-Joy has already been in more movies than her costar, including period horror flick The Witch and M. at least-better known as a folk musician and a theater actor than a film star, although his turn as David Bowie in the biopic Stardust later this year may change that. Flynn is 36, already a father of three and-in the U.K. The three of us are seated in the chilly attic of a Regency-era manor in suburban West London (Austen would have known it as countryside), and the first thing that strikes me is how pleasant-and maybe surprising-it is to see that the two actors seem to be genuine friends they are brimming with anecdotes about how they improvised songs between takes and continue to pelt each other with terrible in-jokes via the cast’s WhatsApp group chat. “Your little ears!” chimes Taylor-Joy sympathetically, nibbling on the corner of a strawberry Haribo that Flynn has fished out of his coat pocket. Taylor-Joy’s ribs are decompressing from the corset she wears to play Jane Austen’s wealthy, meddling antiheroine, while Flynn has gratefully removed the starched high collar that he says gave him a “weird sort of ear chafe” while dressed for the part of her childhood confidant Mr. When I meet Anya Taylor-Joy and Johnny Flynn, the leads in Autumn de Wilde’s much-anticipated new adaptation of Emma, both are suffering the aftereffects of a morning spent in Regency costume. THE APPETITE for British period dramas is costing actors dearly. "It’s like swimming in a giant cupcake,” says Anya Taylor-Joy of the decadent aesthetic in Emma, which opens February 21st.
